Anna is 16 years old and lives in a terraced house with her father Robert and his new wife Sandra. Anna wants to become a chef and was lucky – she got an apprenticeship at Alex's restaurant, a former celebrity chef. But an unexpected encounter with an escaped cow in the forest presents Anna with unforeseen challenges. When Anna encounters the cow, whom she names Matilda, in her dreams, she makes a decision: she wants to save Matilda from her fate and certain death. Anna begins to question the way cows are treated, which leads to tensions with her father, who works at the slaughterhouse from which the cow escaped. The press quickly picks up on the story of the escape, which displeases Robert's boss. When Anna meets the animal rights activists Kevin and Nina, she initially approaches their views with skepticism but finds allies in them to save the cow. But her father, who is supposed to coordinate the capture of the cow, is unwilling to accept either the activists' appeals or Anna's increasingly rebellious behavior. The longer Matilda manages to hide in the forest, the greater the media interest and the pressure on Robert. Time is running out for Anna and the activists. Eventually, the conflict between father and daughter escalates, and Anna must make a decision that will change her life forever.
MATILDA is an affecting look at our relationship with animals, the beliefs that define us and the power of compassion.
