Anna (18) and her father Robert (58) share a single-family house in a small town. Since her mother's death two years ago, Anna has been taking care of the household and supporting her depressed father. Together, they try to pay off the house: Anna has forgone training as a chef to earn more as a kitchen assistant, while Robert, a former carpenter, works at the local slaughterhouse due to health problems. The fragile relationship between the two is marked by the loss of the mother, Antonia. They have not only repressed the grief but also everything that reminds them of Antonia.
When Anna encounters a cow that has escaped from the slaughterhouse where her father works, she decides to help the animal. She regularly returns to the forest to feed the cow. The forest becomes a retreat for Anna, the cow becomes an ally. But Anna struggles to distance herself from Matilda's fate, which haunts her even in her dreams.
A serious traffic accident, allegedly caused by the cow, changes everything. Robert is tasked with organizing the hunt for the supposedly dangerous animal to prevent further incidents. Anna manages to hide the cow in an old barn just in time. But the next day, the cow has escaped from the barn and injured itself in the process. Anna does not give up the search for her, but hopelessness, lack of sleep, and her nightmares drive Anna deeper into a crisis. Dream and reality blur.
When Robert finally uncovers Anna's secret, he faces a difficult decision that not only strains their fragile relationship but also forces them both to confront their repressed past.
MATILDA is a profound exploration of grief, responsibility, and the search for one's own place in the world.
